Monte Vista resident Martin Christopher (Marty) Guttierrez, 34, passed away May 15, 2021, at Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs, surrounded by his loving family.
Born the fourth baby boy to Mike and Joya Guttierrez on December 14, 1986 in Monte Vista, Marty was tiny, yet just as feisty as any of his other brothers were and later became a protective big brother to his sister. He spent many days, day and night with his Salazar grandparents, and it even became a joke that he had changed his name to Marty ‘Salazar’. Throughout his life, he was also known for his many other nicknames such as Monte, Marty-Marts, Jito, W, #4, and a few others that might not be appropriate for a newspaper. As he grew, he loved traveling to Olathe in the summer months to “help” his dad work and even went on an adventure or two to “Del Norte, Texas.” Although shy around strangers, many who knew him, knew his rambunctious personality could never be beat.
As Marty grew up, he quickly found that he was a character of many traits. He loved working, whether that was helping friends and family members with house renovations, fixing vehicles, or maintaining a garden with his grandparents and kids. Marty’s favorite time spent was any time spent in the mountains or watching the Broncos games with family and friends. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone and would never let a friend leave without a smile.
In 2007 Marty met the love of his life, Christy Whiteside and started a family of his own having one son, his Mo Mo, and two beautiful daughters, his “Perties,” his Mari Who and his Happy Who. He was a doting father who had a passion for taking care of his family. Everyone who knew Marty knew that he was the most loyal friend. His infectious smile and magnetic personality are his most special traits that can never be replaced.
Survivors include his wife Christy Whiteside, son Modesto, and daughters Mari and Madison of Monte Vista; four siblings, Michael (Erica) Guttierrez of Alamosa, Mario Guttierrez of Monte Vista, Nicholas (Hailey) Guttierrez of Phoenix, AZ, and Rachael (Lucus) Torres of Monte Vista; Grandmother Martha Salazar of Monte Vista, Mother and father-in-law Josephine and Dennis Whiteside of Del Norte; Sister-in-laws Anna (Ronnie) Crespin of Las Animas, and Irene (Kevin) Whiteside of Del Norte; Paternal aunts and uncles Tom (Kathy) Guttierrez of Greeley, Phil (Bernie) Guttierrez of California, Pat (Bernice) Guttierrez of Monte Vista, Rose (Andy) Sanchez of Arizona; Maternal aunts and uncles Jerry Salazar of Monte Vista, Joey Salazar of New Mexico, Josette (Louie) Borrego of New Mexico, Part time uncle “Peck” Bob Martinez of Monte Vista; nieces and nephews Sierra Whitaker, Mia Guttierrez, Karsynn and Maverick Torres, Henley Guttierrez and Harper Porrello; Several cousins and many friends.
